Referrals, Specialists and cloth diapers

We made it to UCLA last week (after three hours in traffic on the only rainy day last week)an hour late for our apt. They still saw us, thankfully. Here is the gist of it. We saw a nephrologist, one who handles the kidneys and the blood flowing in and out of them. She told us that she was the wrong specialist- we need a urologist, one who handles the "plumbing" and what goes in and out of it.
She explained what is happening inside of May's little body a bit more clearly (with pictorial help) and then referred us to another specialist at UCLA.
We have to get a referral from the pediatrician on the base before we can see the urologist. The referral then has to travel through the insurance company who then has to send a letter of authorization back to the base as well as to the specialist who will then call me and set up an apt. We are hoping this all takes place by the end of this week so that we can have an apt this week, like the nephrologist wanted when she saw the ultrasound report. She made it clear to us, and her nurse that she wanted us back within a week. It is now Tuesday. No call. No apt. No letter of authorization.
I am not freaking out about May's health or anything right now, just freaking out over the fact that the government is willing to risk the health, well being and, at times, lives of people to satisfy their need for red tape bureaucracy. It is appalling to me that they will not think of a faster way to do this for people that need it.
We have decided not to give May the daily dose of antibiotics that were prescribed to her by the nephrologist to prevent a UTI. Just in case she gets one. She doesn't have one- why does she need antibiotics? sigh....
On a much happier note, we finally found out what it was that was causing a very large, very uncomfortable rash on May's little bum. Diary. She can't handle the dairy in my diet. This could be catastrophic to my own diet, such as it is, but dairy is out. So are nuts, cruciferous vegetables, chocolate (unless it is dark chocolate) and, I am sure, several other things yet to be discovered. Poor girl has her dad's sensitive system for right now. The cloth diaper adventure has begun this week. We started yesterday and so far, so good. We really like them. They work just as well, if not better than disposable diapers and we don't feel awful seeing the amount of diapers that we take out to the trash every other day (At least 25 in two days- that is a lot of landfill space). She seems to not mind them and they do MUCH better overnight than disposables. We got a pocket style diaper so I wash them and then stuff the pockets with micro fiber liners. Then they go on just like disposables- they just grow with the baby through the use of sizers that can be adjusted. So, we never have to buy diapers again.
:) There is only one catch to this whole thing that I have to constantly battle- I hate laundry. Mostly just the folding and putting away part- not the actual washing. I will just have to remind myself daily of why I am doing it this way. We'll see how long I can go until my first burn out.
Thanks for reading.
